Who We Are
-
We are just a number of wood
working folks that enjoy what we are doing. We
usually have a very brief meeting if there is
any business. We have our bragging table every
meeting to show off our goodies. We have
patrons of the library that enjoy seeing what
we make. We have had one girl 16 yrs. old that
joined with her mother, who has been in crafts
for years. She when became interested in
scrolling , through me, built the peddle
operated scroll saw. She became profficient
with in three months where she was making
presents to give away. They have moved away
and we have lost them.
-
We also have members that have
a lot of yrs. of experience in wood. Some of
use have been around wood for a large part of
our life. One of our members is a retired
design engineer, who designs his own patterns.
He is into trains in a big way. Hehas sold
trains all over the US, and gets orders all
the time. He also makes
planes,trucks,airplanesand anything that
someone has an idea of. We have another man
that has been in the crafts circuit ,who makes
dolcimers, does some of the most fabulous
carvings I have ever seen. He has a large shop
with a huge selection of wood tools. He has
done scrolling ,turnings,furniture, and what
have you.
-
I my self like fancy
scrolling,turning,especially pen and
pencils, carving if I can find the time. I
built the Dome Clock a couple of yrs. back. I
have built one of the large doll houses. I
have been in construction most of my life. I
started at 8 yrs old with my granddad, who was
a general contractor.
-
We have a man and wife couple
that he does some of the best intarsia that I
have seen. She has been in the yard decoration
part, but has gotten into segmentation and at
the scroll saw picnic in Branson MO., she
brought home a ribbon on a roster that she had
done. Her yard decorations were hand painted
and look like they were out of a mail order
magazine.
-
We are trying to get some
young people interested in wood working. I am
trying to get the A.C.E.S program off the
ground here in north Mississippi. My hopes are
to get more folks involved in the craft.
Why a Club
-
I was interested in finding
other crafters in our area to get together and
share ideas. I had crafts and just sold them
out of my house. I set up at a couple of craft
shows and found that other people had the same
idea. I had attended the S.A.W. picnic at
Lebonon Tn. a couple of yrs ago and was amazed
at the quality and detail that was displayed
there. I made a sign up sheet at the shows and
found folks that liked the idea of a club. It
has been a chore getting it going, but it has
all been worth it. We have had a good yr and
1/2. We have met a lot of interesting
people, both in the craft and customers. We
have leaned about free wood that was being
burned from a furniture co. that we share. It
is hard to explain the comon ground that we
share.
-
Goals We have but one goal
and that is to further the art of wood
crafting and to try and get younger folks
into the fold. If we don't there soon will be
very few able to work with our hands and take
a piece of wood and make something usefull and
beautiful to look at. We need youngsters to
teach the art to .
